Long Song

Itis a specific feature of Mongolian traditional musical culture which is a classical work itself. Origins of Long Song go back over 2000 years andit has a distinct composition. The rhythm is non-metrical and the singing isfree and drawn out. This type of singing is originated from imitation of echoes and portrayal of vast land and remote distances by sound, thus long song singing requires elaborate, broad vocal diapason and breathing techniques. Lyrics are often about such subjects as love for one’s family, loved ones, speedy horses and beautiful motherland. These features give the long song profound philosophical, meditational character, often depicting the spacious mountain valleys and a sense of tranquility, believed to represent the Mongolian soul. Long song singing is usually accompanied by morin khuur. (horse head fiddle).
